German teenager Florian Mach and Thai star Akaseet Jum Jarean combined brilliantly to dismantle the spirited challenge put up by Dubai Public Prosecution in the summit round of the wheelchair basketball event at the multi-sport fourth NAS Ramadan Tournament in Meydan, Saturday night.
Turning up as Al Fursan's import players for the event, they sketched out a 71-50 victory over the Prosecution squad for whom the towering Egyptian veteran Ashraf Abusaid, import Michael Thomas and national ace Mohammed Zarouni stood out.
In the second quarter, Fursan led 23-11 with seven minutes and 50 seconds to go, and they went into the lemon break sitting on 35-21. Fursan consolidated the issue for a 58-38 third outing score in their favour, and despite several attempts and conversions of three-pointers, Prosecution could not match their more versatile and younger opponents.
With eight minutes and 17 seconds remaining in the match, Fursan led 61-40 before running out worthy champions.
UAE league stars Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Tariq Alyasi and Salah Faraj added depth to Fursan's raids with pin-point accuracy when Jarean and Mach ran into a bad patch late in the fourth quarter.
Jarean told Khaleej Times: "Unforced errors and wayward shooting in the late stages took the shine off some of the earlier work in the first half, but thankfully Ibrahim, Tariq and Salah more than made up."
"We stuck to what the team management advised us and kept locking up the empty space zones which our opponents took advantage of thanks to their experience," said Mach.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) with Marino Buic running into form during the crucial moments edged hosts Dubai Club for Special Sports 'B' 31-28 in the bronze medal playoff earlier in the night.
In the indoor soccer championship for players challenged by hearing difficulties, UAE powerhouse Al Thiqah Club, Sharjah trounced Abu Dhabi Club 9-0 in the final.
The men's open padel final saw the experienced duo of Sandy Farquharson and Javier Lopez coasting to a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Javier Molina and German Zunica, during the early hours on Sunday. - moni@khaleejtimes.com
