Pakistan cricket team captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed, faced criticism on social media for turning up in traditional attire with the team blazer at an event to meet the Queen of England. After the brutal backlash from some, Ahmed gained massive support from netizens who applauded him for wearing the traditional attire of his country.
All ten skippers of the teams playing in the ICC World Cup 2019 met Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Harry were present for a Garden Party at the Buckingham Palace, before the opening ceremony on Wednesday. While all were wearing formal western attire, only Ahmed was donning a dark green official blazer over a simple white kurta-pyjama, reported The Indian Express.
It's really sad that even in such a competitive world, we are judging based on clothes. Let me remind you sir, we Indians too have almost same culture and it's good if @SarfarazA_54 wants to promote his culture. Also, GROW UP.Soon the pictures from the event made it to social media with some not impressed with Ahmed's choice of dressing. Leading the list was columnist Tarek Fatah, ridiculed Ahmed and wrote: 'I'm surprised he didn't come in his Lungi-Banyan-Topi costume'. But, Fatah's tweets on the Pakistani captain quickly went viral online and triggered angry comments from netizens who also accused Fatah of having a "colonial hangover".
