The death toll from the storm which struck central and eastern Europe last week rose to 24 and some areas are still under threat from rising waters
A quick-fire 57-run seventh-wicket partnership between Kieron Pollard (12-ball 34) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (12-ball 24) bolstered Mumbai Indians to 176/6 against Kings XI Punjab in Dubai.
This was after opener Quinton de Kock hit a 43-ball 53 and shared a 58-run stand with Krunal Pandya (30-ball 34).
Electing to bat, Mumbai openers Rohit Sharma and de Kock made brisk starts with boundaries but Punjab soon delivered body blows.
Seamers Arshdeep Singh cleaned up skipper Sharma (9) and Ishan Kishan (7), and Mohammed Shami picked Suryakumar Yadav (0).
Part-time spinner Glenn Maxwell bowled an efficient spell. After the power play overs, Mumbai were 43/3 with de Kock standing tall with Krunal. The pair rotated strikes and converted boundaries as Mumbai chugged to 70/3 after 10 overs.
In the middle overs, left-handers de Kock and Krunal punished short balls from leg-spinner Murugan Ashwin and part-timer Deepak Hooda for fours and a maximum. The only bowler to make an impact was spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who threw a spanner in the works to end the fourth-wicket stand by snaring Krunal (34).
De Kock carried on, reaching his 50 from 39 balls – his fourth half-century from last five innings – by walloping Ashwin for a six and a four. Scoring half the runs, he took Mumbai to 114/4 after 15 overs.
In the death overs, Shami returned to send Hardik Pandya (8) packing. Mumbai slipped further as De Kock (53) mishit Chris Jordan and was caught.
But new batsmen Pollard (34) and Coulter-Nile (24) plundered 22 off Singh and 22 from Jordan’s final over to drive Mumbai to 176/6. Pollard smashed four maximums and a four ensuring a competitive total.
