As he hurtled down the Graywacke aggregate surface of the lit up Yas Marina Circuit and crossed the finish line, Peter Sagan looked to his left and saw Elia Viviani arms up in the air.
It happened two days ago and it had happened again.
The newly crowned world champion was relegated to second best by the Italian again, twice in two days. The Tinkoff-Saxo rider was bracing for a Stage win in the inaugural Abu Dhabi Tour to round off the season and had come close in The Capital Stage, on Friday.
The Slovakian was just 150 metres away from the finish line but Viviani's tactical move landed him the 129km Stage.
And on Sunday, in the final Stage of the Tour, The Yas Stage, Sagan was denied again right at the finish, with just a matter of an inch separating the two. Sagan, who had made a Formula One style 'pit stop' for a change of bike, rode back to the team garage, dejected. He strolled in, punching the handle bars of his bike.
He later took a look at a photographer's camera to confirm if he had indeed lost out yet again.
When told, he was almost there, Sagan replied: "Almost is still second it's not first. We will see next year. I have finished the season I am happy about that."
The 25-year-old, though, was thrilled with experience of racing on a Formula One Circuit.
"It was very special, very different. That was cool. It was quite a fast Stage. The last lap, we went too fast, it was good, big turns. It was fun to ride here," he said.
Sagan also said it was fun to do a 'pit stop' and spice it up a bit for the fans. "We tried to do like in Formula One. It was fun for the people, for the fans," said Sagan.
