Dubai is synonymous with records, so it came as no surprise when seven of them were shattered during the 2018 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon on Friday.
Ethiopia's Mosinet Geremew, who entered the race just days before, sprinted across the finish line with a course record of 2h:04m:00s in one of the most thrilling finishes in marathon history. Debutant Leul Gebresilase took second place just two seconds later (2:04:02), while defending champion Tamirat Tola finished third in 2:04:06. Such was the quality of the race that Tola beat his own 2017 winning course record time by five seconds and yet just managed to take the podium.
The women's race also produced record-breaking results as Roza Dereje of Ethiopia clocked a course record of 2:19:17, becoming the seventh fastest woman in marathon history.
