The third Shaikha Hind Women's Sports Tournament resumed on Tuesday at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), after the three-day mourning period for UAE's martyrs in Yemen.
The Woman's Sports Committee at the Dubai Sports Council are running the event under the directives of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of DSC, and under the patronage of Shaikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Public Prosecution and DEWA have a handball date next while Dubai Municipality competes against RTA in the rescheduled list of matches.
In volleyball, Public Prosecution were scheduled to meet DEWA in Group A while Dubai Educational Zone were given an early round assignment against Dubai Customs in Group B.
Dubai Municipality runs into DEWA next in Group A of the highly competitive basketball championship, to be followed by the Public Prosecution-Dubai Police encounter in Group B.
The badminton tourney sees a big list of matches to be seen through in the tightly packed programme this week with more than 30 fixtures put up on the match notice board. The matches are to be simultaneously held on the parallel courts at the DWTC.
Seventeen matches were seen through in badminton during the latter part of the weekend where UAE topper Mona Al Sahlawi beat Fatima Mohammed; Fatima Mohammed Jawad defeated Zahra Taleb; Maryam Al Salaqi surpassed Hamda Al Najjar; and Amna Naseeb overcame both Amina Abdulla and Maryam Ali in two successive matches.
Also clearing the first round were Shaima Ali Malik; Sanaa Mubarak; Nadia Bin Khadim; Fatima Sabel; Bushrat Akhtar; Hazel Liya; Michelle Obalt; Ahlam Saleh and Maryam Ali Hassan.
The swimming competition begins at Al Wasl Club Swimming Pool on Friday while cycling which is one of the more popular events in the Tournament will be held on Saturday at the Nad Al-Sheba Cycling Racecourse. DEWA won the team title of the 3,000m road run where, while Nada Saleh won gold and prizemoney in the individual category with a time of 14.49:42 minutes, last week.
The closing function is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, the main venue at the DWTC in the presence of top sports leaders and prominent personalities.
Special facilities including children's play areas and free medical checkups have been arranged by the organisers for children and family members of the participants and visitors to the event.
