All three Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstars scored in a 4-3 thriller on Sunday, saving the Qatari-backed club from the brink of a fourth consecutive loss.
The French league leaders were only minutes away from defeat, but Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, whose 95th minute freekick found the back of the net, stepped up to turn the tables on Lille.
PSG began the match on a high, leading 2-0 after 17 minutes with goals by Mbappe and Neymar. But the French champions conceded ground to their Ligue 1 opponents in spectacular fashion, conceding three back-to-back goals.
Had it not been for Mbappe’s late equaliser and Messi’s sublime freekick at the Parc des Princes, PSG’s woes would have continued.
PSG have a five-point lead over second-place Marseille, which kept the pressure on the leaders with a 3-2 win at Toulouse, ahead of their clash next week at the Stade Velodrome in the biggest match in French soccer, news agency AP reported.
Despite the win, there was bad news for PSG. Neymar was stretchered off the field after twisting his right ankle when his team was leading 2-1.
He was injured following contact with Lille’s Benjamin Andre, and it was unclear whether the Brazilian icon will be able to play next Sunday against Marseille.
“He sprained his right ankle. He is undergoing tests to know the extent,” PSG coach Christophe Galtier was quoted as saying by AP.
Take a look at Messi’s goal that gave PSG their hard-fought victory:
