After a decent opening round, the UAE endured a tough day in the second round of the 27th Nomura Cup at the Yas Links on Friday.
The hosts ended the day with a score of 463, 31 over par and 56 shots adrift of leaders Chinese Taipei. That saw them fall behind Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia among the GCC countries. The 18-year-old left-hander Ahmed Skaik came with a 79 on the day, while Rashid Hamood and Khalid Yousuf had scores of 80 and 82 respectively. Abdull Al Qubaisi had a non-counting score of 86.
Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei, winners of the gold medal at last year's Asia Games in South Korea, have taken everyone by surprise. After sharing the first round lead with Japan at 18 under par, Chinese Taipei built up a five-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the Championship. Han-Ting Chiu carded 65, the lowest round of the day as the Chinese Taipei returned with seven-under 209 in the second round. They have an overall score of 25-under 407.
Japan are placed second with 412, while Thailand have 419 and are 12 shots behind. Australia are finding it tough too at the Yas Links. The record Nomura Cup winners with 10 titles, are placed sixth, while New Zealand are fifth on 425, 18 shots behind. "It's a low score, a lovely score," said non-playing captain Tim Sung, who was captain the last time Chinese Taipei won the Nomura Cup, 18 years ago in 1997.
