Manufacturers cut costs by not having to offer a DVD, a handbook or packaging but often do not pass on the savings to the customer. According to Germany’s weekly Computer Bild magazine, over-the-counter PC games are often cheaper than their download equivalents.

Availability is the main advantage of downloading games, saving users the trouble of trawling retailers who may not stock what they are looking for.

Payment is usually made using a credit card. Buyers should be aware, however, that downloading the large amounts of data which go to make up modern computer games can take several hours, depending on the performance of the computer used.
