Anyone who has owned a Nokia mobile phone - and that means a massive slice of the population - knows about the popular game, Snake. The video game came installed with the brand's various mobile phones and quickly became a great pastime.
Almost everyone remembers the pixelated snake moving around the screen chasing its target. Doing so will make the snake longer until you have to carefully plan your movements lest the snake hits itself and you lose the game.
Years after it was first introduced on Nokia phones, the classic game returns as Google marks April Fool's day this year. The mechanics are still the same but it's undergone some changes, you can even say that they are of a global scale.
Landing on the Google homepage, you're greeted with a small sentence which reads: "Google Maps has changed the game. Play now". Clicking on the words "Play Now" takes you to Google Maps Snake where you can play the classic game.
This retro-inspired iteration uses the world map and some major cities as its backdrop and instead of snakes, players control trains and even a double decker bus as they "pick up" passengers and visit landmarks.
The mechanics remain the same, pick up as many passengers, and avoid running off the map or into your own vehicle.
Players can choose to play the game on various cities such as Cairo, Sao Paulo, London, Sydney, San Francisco, Tokyo, and; if you're feeling up for it, the entire world.
According to The Verge, users can also get the game on both iOS and Android though it will only be available for the rest of the week. Google also launched a standalone site if you want to play it past that time.
