Murray has won eight of their 13 clashes, although he has come up short when it really mattered, namely in the finals of the 2008 US Open and this year’s Australian Open when the Swiss reduced him to tears.
Both players won their opening Group B matches in style at the season-ending showpiece, Murray crushing Sweden’s Robin Soderling and Federer easing past David Ferrer.
Whoever wins on Tuesday will have one foot in the semi-finals.
Murray won their most recent meeting when he outplayed the 16-times grand slam champion in the Shanghai Masters final and that chastening experience will be fresh in the mind of Federer who is bidding for a record-equalling fifth title at the Tour finale.
“We’ve kind of peaked at similar times this year,” world number two Federer said as he looked ahead to meeting Murray for the second year in a row at the O2 Arena, having won their electrifying clash last year.
“We both played well at the Australian, then we played well in Toronto. We both played well in Shanghai. Here it seems like we’re both playing well again.
“I guess overall I’ve been a bit more consistent than he has, otherwise I wouldn’t be in front in the rankings. He’s had a great season and it’s going to be a great match.”
Tuesday’s second match is between French Open runner-up Soderling and Ferrer.
