Nine children were injured in two separate accidents involving schoolbuses in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. In the first incident, six children were injured after the schoolbus they were in crashed into another vehicle near the Union Bank on Al Reem Island.
An Asian girl sustained serious injuries in the crash, while the rest of the kids suffered minor ones, the police said. A man and a woman also were hurt.
In the second incident, three Emirati kids were injured after their bus collided with a car near Al Raha Beach. Two other women were also injured.
The police did not clarify how the accidents happened, but urged motorists to avoid tailgating. "We urge motorists to drive carefully and pay attention while behind the wheel," said Brigadier Mohammed Dahi Al Humairi, director of traffic and patrols department.
The UAE has stepped up safety measures to curb accidents involving schoolbuses.
In Abu Dhabi, 3,664 motorists were fined for ignoring the schoolbus stop signs during the academic year 2018-19.
The penalty for this offence is a Dh1,000 fine and 10 black points.
