Two online transportation companies, Uber and Careem, had their services suspended in the Capital on August 27, after police arrested multiple drivers and seized a number of vehicles.
Rumours surrounding the situation suggested that the suspension related to safety, as well as licensing issues.
Khaleej Times contacted the Abu Dhabi Police, but is yet to receive a response. Uber, however, did reply, but without any information regarding the suspension of the service, stating: "At this time we are not making any further comments on the situation." Careem on the other hand, reached out to clarify the ambiguity of the suspension.
Christian Eid, VP of marketing at Careem, said the halt was not relating to safety. "We received complete assurance from the authorities on the legal standing of our operations in Abu Dhabi. We have been reassured that this is not a legality or safety matter for Careem."
"Currently, the regulations for our industry include requiring a minimum price, as well as operating solely with limousine licensed vehicles and drivers."
"The recent events have created a climate of uncertainty and fear for our limousine partners," he added. Nevertheless, the private transportation company resumed their work on Wednesday morning.
"Careem is back in Abu Dhabi since 8am this morning (Wednesday) and is operating on a skeleton basis until we are able to regain most of our fleet. We decided to re-open our service primarily to support our Captains who rely on us to get business."
"Supply may be an issue in the Capital at the beginning, so we ask our customers to be patient with us until we gradually increase our fleet to meet demand."
He noted that the company is still working closely with Abu Dhabi authorities "to secure our mission, to provide a reliable platform for Careem Captains, as well as a transport solution for our customers that is unparalleled in our region."
