The Department of Public Works and Services in Ras Al Khaimah has started developing major roads and roundabouts of the emirate.
A senior official said the move is in line with the facelift being given to the northern emirate.
Ahmed Al Hammadi, Director-General of the Department, said piles of dust at the roundabouts have been removed and replaced with soil suitable for ornamental plants. “We are developing the Etihad or Union road, particularly the first roundabout and the Diamond roundabout close to the bridge there.”
The piles of dust and sand have been removed from these two roundabouts and ornamental plants have been planted. Al Hammadi said flowering plants have been planted at the roundabout at the Qawasim Corniche down the bridge. The Shaikh Mohammed bin Salem stretch extending from the Ship Roundabout to the Clock Roundabout has been replanted as well, he added.
A new technology whereby water consumption shall be cut by around 50 per cent is also being implemented.
“The department has changed the irrigation system in all the roads and roundabouts where there is greenery, particularly the Shaikh Mohammed bin Salem road, Al Qarm road, and many other roads.”
He said the development process includes innovative designs, lighting, flowering plants and green areas.
“The designs adopted, not only help motorists see the roundabouts clearly, but also reflect the advanced architectural image of the country.”
“Littering is totally banned on the roads of the emirate and special patrols roam around the emirate to spot any such violations,” he said. As per Article 40 of the traffic law, a fine of Dh500 shall be imposed on any motorist spotted polluting the environment.
The same Dh500 fine, along with four black points shall be slapped against any motorist or passenger caught dumping wastes on the road.
