The Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate will activate surveillance cameras at 36 more intersections in Abu Dhabi from Tuesday to detect speeding motorists who jump the red signal.
The measure is in line with the directorate’s traffic safety strategy to make roads safer and reduce causes of traffic accidents. Brigadier Eng Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, directorate director, said 108 surveillance cameras are at work now at Abu Dhabi intersections. The high-tech cameras use infrared technology, capturing images without the use of flash to catch violators on all lanes.
They are 3D thermal cameras covering more than five lanes in each direction. They are also multifunctional, including infrared licence plate readers. They can determine the numbers of passing vehicles, what types the cars are, estimate the average speed, and determine the number and direction of pedestrians when traffic signals turn green and red.
The system is unique in that it is linked to the directorate’s notifications and text messaging system, as well as portable variable message signs.
The brigadier warned about the dangers of exceeding the speed limits at intersections. He urged drivers to adhere to traffic rules, reduce speed at traffic lights junctions and avoid increasing speed when the light turned amber. Violations detected by the monitors at intersections include jumping the red light, unsafe lane changes, stopping over crosswalk lines, exceeding legal speed limits, overtaking at junctions, and making turns or U-turns from the wrong lane.
Brigadier Al Harithi said the surveillance system represents one of the most important projects to improve traffic safety, which is based on 6Es: Engineering, education, enforcement, emergency, evaluation and engagement.
