Ras Al Khaimah: The Ministry of Public Works, in collaboration with the Ras Al Khaimah Police, opened the Nakheel Intersection on Wednesday.

According to a senior official, Al Nuaimi Group, responsible for the project, was very keen to finish the construction work before the celebrations of the 43rd UAE National Day.“The arterial intersection is very vital due to the significance of Al Nakheel business area which is always overcrowded, particularly on feasts and national occasions.” Some 90 to 98 per cent of the 9km Gasidat-Shaml road, which is linked to the Nakheel Intersection, have been completed, the same source added.

“All obstacles that were hampering and postponing the project, such as the old facilities due to lack of maps, were removed.”

Dr Rashid Al Nuaimi, CEO of Al Nuaimi Group, said the intersection, also known as Gulf Cinema Intersection, links the Jazaa and Oman roads. “All lanes have been opened, except one in the RAK National Bank, and that will be completed in 10 days.”

The renovation of the 9.12km-long Nakheel road required much time due to the 40-year-old facilities and services in both directions, he noted.

“We had to replace the water, electricity, and even communication supply lines along the road, and that was done in coordination with the Ministry of Public Works.”

Dr Al Nuaimi said they have also built two bridges over the Nakheel and Shaml roads. “Two pedestrian flyovers were built and two others are under construction as well.”

One of the pedestrian bridges is equipped with an escalator to ease people’s crossing of the Shaml road because the area is heavily populated on both sides, he said.
