The right lane on King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Street in Abu Dhabi will be blocked for motorists starting December 1.
The lane will be exclusively designated for emergency vehicles, public transport buses and taxis, the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate announced on its twitter handle.
The rule applies to vehicles plying on both directions on the street.
Motorists who drive on the lane will be fined Dh400, said the police.
UAE authorities had on earlier occasions launched awareness drives to ensure emergency vehicles are given way. In October this year, Dubai police launched a campaign titled 'Give way, Give hope', with an aim to educate motorists about the importance of not blocking emergency vehicles.
The video released as part of the campaign gave detailed instructions on how to give way to emergency vehicles. For instance, motorists should not pass a red light even while letting an emergency vehicle pass. And cars passing the green signals are expected to stop for the emergency vehicles.
