Abu Dhabi motorists can now pay traffic fines in interest-free installments for one whole year.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Abu Dhabi Police said the initiative, which allows drivers with traffic fines to pay them in parts as per their affordability, is being carried out in cooperation with five banks in the UAE. These include; Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB), First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), Mashreq Al Islami and Emirates Islamic Bank.
To avail of the service, drivers must have credit cards issued by one of these banks. A motorist has to contact the bank directly, within a period not exceeding two weeks from the date of being booked, to request for payment of traffic fines in installments.
"The service allows fines to be paid through Abu Dhabi Police service centres and digital channels such as the website and the smart phone application, with a one-year installment system without any interest charged," said the police.
Authorities have called on the public to take advantage of the installment facility because it was easier and convenient for many motorists.
"The service aims to ease life for drivers and vehicle owners by paying off the traffic violation fines in installments throughout the year," the statement underlined.
235 crashes due to sudden swerving on Abu Dhabi roads
As many as 4,311 violations were recorded against drivers caught changing lanes suddenly and without using indicators from January until August 20 last year, the Abu Dhabi Police pointed out. These led to 235 crashes in which one person died and six others were injured.
The fine for abrupt change of lane is Dh1,000 and four black points.
Sudden change of lanes has been reported among the most common causes of accidents on Abu Dhabi roads.
"Sudden swerving and jumping another lane in front of a vehicle without using signals can result in fatal accidents and lead to traffic fines," the police said in a fresh warning issued on Wednesday. They added that switching of lanes without indication was very dangerous.
