A new smart system has been installed in 50 public buses to monitor the physical condition of bus drivers and spot signs of exertion and fatigue.
This is a pilot project by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and eventually, 1,500 buses will be fitted with the system.
The RTA officials said they understand that drivers may experience fatigue during journeys within Dubai or inter-city trips. Fatigue may cause accidents, which put passengers' safety at risk and "also affect the operational efficiency of buses".
The move is in line with the smart city initiative launched by the Dubai government.
Dr Yousef Al Ali, CEO of RTA's Public Transport Agency, said: "The trial run of this smart system involves fitting a sophisticated device in front of the bus driver to monitor any indicators of fatigue, tiredness or illness suffered by the driver through technological indicators that are transmitted to the control room at the RTA.
"There is also another smart system that monitors the driving pattern of the driver in terms of exceeding the speed limit, disregard to safe driving principles, and irresponsible use of brakes, sudden swerving and using mobile phone while driving." -reporters@khaleejtimes.com
How the system works
A device in front of the bus driver monitors any indicators of fatigue, tiredness or illness suffered by the driver through technological indicators that are transmitted to the control room at the RTA.
