More than 300 pedestrians had been involved in run-over accidents in Abu Dhabi last year because drivers failed to slow down at crossings, police said.
The Abu Dhabi Police said as many as 15,588 drivers were fined over this offence from January this year until the end of June.
"Drivers should always stop at pedestrian crossings. They also need to be tolerant and safely give way to pedestrians at uncontrolled crossings and school zones," the authorities said.
Failure to give way to pedestrians is a violation punishable by a Dh500 fine and six black points, according to the federal traffic law.
A stiff Dh5,000 fine, along with impoundment, shall also be imposed on a driver who causes an accident because of this violation, based on the new impounding rules that were recently rolled out by the Abu Dhabi Police.
Jaywalking, on the other hand, is another offence that comes with a fine of Dh400.
