Probe into cruise control incident

Dr Hashim Saeed Al Nuaimi, Director of the Consumer Protection Department of the Ministry of Economy said the ministry has contacted the persons connected with the 4WD vehicle, the cruise control of which had developed a glitch.

Emirati, Abdullah Al Mulla, who was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser allegedly lost control of the vehicle at 120kmph while in ‘cruise control mode’ on the Emirates Roads along the Umm Al Quwain-Ras Al Khaimah highway.

The ministry approached both the owner of the vehicle and the auto dealer to take proper action in order to maintain consumers’ rights especially after the ministry received queries from consumers who have the same model.

The ministry demanded the local dealer of the vehicle to prepare a technical report on the reasons behind the accident and to keep checking other cars of the same model and year of manufacture and write down any comment if reported by owners of the same model.

The Ministry of Economy, he said, is awaiting results of a report being made by the Ministry of Interior for being an official neutral body to stand on the real reasons that led to such incident, which would have been fatal if the police had not stepped in and guided the driver to drive towards a sand dune which absorbed the collision impact.

If any glitch is encountered and mentioned in the technical reports, the ministry shall order the local auto dealer to recall the same model of the car in the country immediately to fix and repair the malfunction.
