RTA Dubai begins Innovation Week events

Dubai - Among the events that RTA plans to hold this week are workshops for employees to explain 3D printing and show off the latest in high-tech robot and drone prototypes.

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) began a week of diverse Innovation Week events on Sunday, offering glimpses on how innovation has helped RTA develop its mega-projects and cope with the demands of the future.
Among the events that RTA plans to hold this week are workshops for employees to explain 3D printing and show off the latest in high-tech robot and drone prototypes. An "innovation cinema" in which international speakers in the fields of innovations will be shown, as well as a "readers club" to encourage employees to read more and share knowledge by nurturing a competitive environment for winning the best presentation about a book.
Additionally, RTA's Innovation Week plans to include the "1,000 Years of Innovation" exhibit which will highlight the contribution of Arab and Muslim scientists over the centuries, as well as an "Innovation in Motion" bus which will ply all parts of Dubai.
The week includes the third experiment of the driverless smart vehicle in the Business Bay, and a technical exhibition at the Union Metro Station comprising an electronic drawing corner fitted with display monitors. Riders and visitors will be able to draw their own portraits with the assistance of some RTA-designed shapes replicating some of Dubai symbols and the mobility sectors of the emirate.
In an address given at the opening ceremony of RTA's Innovation Week, director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors, Mattar Al Tayer, noted that the RTA "has embraced innovation from day one and endeavoured to make it a key component of its projects and initiatives.
"The latest addition to these projects is the Dubai Water Canal which opened a few days ago. The canal has reshaped the complexion of Dubai and added a gorgeous element to the city and is bound to have a huge environmental, economic and tourist impact on the Emirate. The RTA has adopted a unique style in the construction of the canal project," he said.
Al Tayer noted that RTA implemented innovation in its design of the Dubai Metro and Tramlines, which had to pass through densely populated areas and service centres that boosted the feasibility of the two projects to bring economic dividends to the Emirate.
