Summer’s a breeze at Sharjah bus station

As the summer months draw in, Sharjah Transport has installed 140 metres of shade, water fans, and e-screens at Al Jubail Bus Station, in a bid to cool down overheated passengers.

The company says the shade will help ease the suffering of public transport passengers and protect them against sweltering temperatures, promising for an easier summer this year.

Intercity Transport manager Khalid Al Khayal said the Jubail station, near Sharjah’s fish market, is undergoing thorough maintenance and development works: “We have already maintained, replaced, and added new water fans at all waiting areas of the station.”

About 5.2 million passengers used the Jubail Public Bus Station in Sharjah in 2012, he said, with a monthly average of 436,000 passengers. The intercity bus trips operating over the same year hit 140,000 which was a monthly average of 12,000 trips, he said.

Al Khayal said Sharjah Transport had also installed signs and boards across the station to ease traffic flow: “Specific areas have also been lined in colour to show passengers uploading and downloading spots.” The company had also installed new boards to show the bus route numbers: “New e-LCD screens have been fixed to show all the details of bus trips and timings.”

Already noticing the change, passenger Akram Mustafa commented: “Hopefully, we will have an easier summer this year with all the changes and additions in the main station which thousands of passengers use on a daily basis.”

Another passenger Arif Abdul Khaliq said:

“We have long asked for shades and water fans, and finally the officials concerned responded to us in a very good way.”
