Tunnel-drilling of Dubai Metros Route 2020 completed

Dubai - The trial run of the metro will start in February 2020.

Dubai is now one step closer to connecting its Metro line to the Expo 2020 site. According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, key tunnelling works of the Route 2020 Project have been completed.
The 3.2km tunnel has a depth ranging from 12 to 36 metres.
Works on the tunnel began in October in October last year off Discovery Gardens. It progressed to the underground station near Jumeirah Golf Estates last February before continuing past Dubai Investment Park and up to the final point at the Green Community.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said the giant tunnel boring machine, branded 'Al Wugeisha Expo 2020', can crush stones and penetrate through sandy layers or any other soil components encountered during the drilling process.

"Al Wugesha is also environment-friendly and has no negative effects on land layers near the drilling area. Moreover, the tunnels it produces have symmetrical dimensions, which facilitates construction works and reduces the expenses of tunnel wall installation," Al Tayer added.
Al Tayer said works in the metro viaducts are set for completion in November this year, and all railway works of the project would be accomplished in July 2019. The trial run of the Metro would start in February 2020.

Route 2020 explained

Route 2020 involves extending the Red Line of the Dubai Metro from Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station to the site of Expo 2020 over a 15km stretch. It comprises a 11km-long viaduct and 4km-long underground rail track. It will encompass seven stations: five elevated and two underground stations.
The capacity of the route is estimated at 46,000 riders per hour in both directions.
