The Sharjah Municipality has impounded 3,319 vehicles found abandoned and neglected in various parts of the city, including sandy areas near the airport, as part of an ongoing crackdown.
The municipality also issued warning to 7,268 car owners and fined 4,719 vehicles for committing various violations that distort the city's image.
Khalid bin Falah Al Suwaidi, assistant general manager for customer service sector, said that most of the impounded cars did not carry number plates and some of them were put on sale in places that are not assigned for such displays.
The campaign is being carried out under the slogan 'Do not neglect your car' by the Sharjah Municipality in coordination with the Sharjah Police. Awareness on the issue is also being raised among members of the community through social and traditional media.
Saeed Bu Rahaima, director of inspection operations at the Sharjah Municipality, said the campaign is part of the civic body's keenness to check any activity that fouls the aesthetic look of the city and to monitor all negative phenomena in the emirate.

Many residents fly out of the country on summer vacations, leaving their cars in places where they should not. The municipality inspection targeted these vehicles that are parked in sandy areas near the airport or adjacent to buildings where these residents live or in public places. "We advise the people through the awareness drives to use the private parking lot to keep their cars safe and clean during their absence.
The municipality gives car owners a grace period of 24 to 72 hours to remove their vehicles if they are found parked for long periods of time at no-parking zones. "The inspectors follow up and respond to complaints received at the municipality call center at 993."
Rahaima pointed out that the release of the car is carried out through the website of the municipality by entering the vehicle's data and making sure that it is in the municipality's impound yard. It has to be checked that there are no police restrictions against the vehicle. After this, fines of violations have to be paid to receive the "releasing permit" receipt.
