These ornate places of worship are held in high regard by the locals and serve as places of awe and magnificence towards expats. Here are some fine examples of Muslim architecture.
Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque - Abu Dhabi
The Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi carries the unique title of being accessible by tourists and expats. Ladies are required to wear headscarves before entering the mosque premises. Known for its opulent white motif, the Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest of its kind in the UAE and can accommodate up to 40,000 worshippers.
Grand Mosque (Bur Dubai) - Dubai
Rebuilt twice in 1952 and in 1999 the Grand Mosque in Bur Dubai is the oldest mosque in the emirate. Situated at the heart of Old Dubai, the mosque is surrounded by several cultural attractions such as the Ruler's Court and the Grand Souq. It's best to see it at night when its lit up.
Salem Al Muttawa Mosque - Khor Fakkan, Sharjah
Also known as the mosque in the Dh5 bill, the Salem Al Muttawa is one of the oldest mosques in the UAE seconded only by the Al Badiyah Mosque in Fujairah. It is located 20 metres from the sea of Khor Fakkan and is notable for its simplistic style.
Al Badiyah Mosque - Fujairah
Estimate to have been built during the 15^th century, the Al Badiyah Mosque is the oldest existing mosque in the UAE and is a fine example of mud and stone architecture. Also known as the Ottoman Mosque, it is still open and is actually a must-see attraction in the emirate.
Blue Mosque - Al Safa, Dubai
The Al Farooq Omar Bin Khattab Mosque, also popularly known as the Blue Mosque is the largest one in Dubai and is located in the lush Al Safa area. The mosque takes it cues from the Turkey's historic Blue Mosque and is a mixture of Ottoman and Andalusian styles.
Al Noor Mosque - Sharjah
Built by order of Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, the Al Noor Mosque towers above the Corniche and is city's most beautiful structure. It takes its cues from Turkish Ottoman architecture and is laden with 34 cascading domes.
Masjid Al Rahim - Dubai
Standing on the banks of the Dubai Marin is the Masjid Al Rahim. It is known to light up in blue and white in the evenings blending easily with the façade of the Dubai Marina and its towering apartment buildings.
King Faisal Mosque - Sharjah
Located along the street that bears the same name, the King Faisal Mosque is one of Sharjah's largest and can accommodate up to 17,000 people.
Iranian Mosque - Satwa
The ornately decorated Iranian Mosque in Al Satwa is one of two Iranian mosques in Dubai. It was constructed in 1979 with the support of the Iranian Red Crescent and hosts a façade filled with a rainbow of colours with blues being a dominant hue.

A distinct structure in Al Barsha, easily visible by its brightly lit minarets, the Al Salam Mosque is a newly constructed mosque which was inaugurated by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. It has primary cues of Emirati architecture with a blend of Andalusian and Ottoman.
