Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, will witness the inauguration of the eighth edition of the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival (SCRF) at the Sharjah Expo Centre today.
Running till April 30, the SCRF 2016 is organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) in line with the directives of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and under the patronage of his wife, Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.
Themed 'Shine out', the 11-day festival is being held with the participation of 130 publishers from 15 countries.
The UAE tops the list with the participation of 55 publishing houses, followed by Lebanon with 25 and Egypt with 20. Canada, China, India and the United Kingdom are among the many other countries having a significant presence at this year's festival.
The SCRF 2016 will feature 1,518 events spanning several programmes; the Children's Programme with 1,245 events, the Cultural Programme with 74, the Cookery Programme with 61 and the workshops with 27.
Beyond Planet Earth
For the first time, the SCRF will host 'Beyond Planet Earth,' a spectacular exhibition that takes visitors on a journey to explore space flight. The exhibition features mini-presentations offering glimpses of what might happen over the next 50 to 100 years. The special installation comprises the 'Solar System Theatre,' 'Returning to the Moon,' 'Exploring Asteroids' and 'Voyaging to Mars,' designed to take the intrepid traveller on a tour of the solar system and beyond.
