The Abu Dhabi Police seized 12,980 vehicles between January 1 and November 30 last year for exceeding the maximum speed limits by more than 60km/h. Vehicles were impounded for one month, and motorists were slapped with a fine of Dh1,000 and 12 black points.
Traffic deaths caused by speeding decreased by 27 per cent in Abu Dhabi in 2015 as compared to 2014, the Abu Dhabi Police have said. Serious injuries resulting from accidents caused by speeding declined by 49 per cent.
Brigadier Khalifa Mohammed Al Khaili, deputy director of traffic and patrols directorate, attributed the decline to the "unrelenting efforts" exerted as part of the Abu Dhabi Police's traffic safety strategy. He highlighted the positive impact of control devices such as radars as a deterrent to reckless drivers.
Brig Al Khaili explained that in keeping with the transparency strategy, the Abu Dhabi Police have informed motorists of radars' locations through signage boards on both sides of the road. He pointed out that drivers who reduce their speed near radars and increase it after passing them are being monitored and will be fined.
He said there are mobile radars such as the sniper and mobile radar and their locations are "constantly changed". - Wam
