Fifteen crushing plants in Fujairah have been fined during the first half of the year for violating environmental regulations, according to Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation (FNRC).
"All crushing plants here are urged to observe public safety regulations to keep the environment clean. Penalties range from fines to temporary or permanent closure," said Ali Qassim, director-general of FNRC.
Six quarries were fined in Al Heel area, four in the Central Region, and five in Al Twain area, he said. They have all received warning notices previously but failed to address the concern.
More inspectors are set to be deployed to ensure the quarries' compliance with safety rules and environmental benchmarks, Qassim said.
"The corporation is also using a network of surveillance cameras that are installed on roads leading to the plants to monitor the operations round the clock."
He said strict monitoring has led to a significant drop in environmental policy violations.
The negative impacts of quarrying have also been mitigated, Qassim added, and the air quality in the emirate is declared 'environmentally stable'.
"The number of heavy trucks on public roads, which used to be a big concern for residents, has decreased," he said.
