18 students receive Cambridge Awards

DUBAI — Eighteen high achieving UAE students who have excelled at University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) exams this year received the Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cambridge Awards 2005 at a ceremony held at the Knowledge Village, yesterday.

Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presented the awards to UAE students in the presence of William Bickerdike, CIE Regional Manager for Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan and Di Palmer, CIE’s Director of Assessment and a number of prominent local dignitaries. “CIE congratulates the students for gaining exceptional results in their examinations,” said Bickerdike.

The award category for Cambridge Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement for top performing male and female students at Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level in each of three geographical regions; Dubai, Abu Dhabi and from those students at schools in the remaining Emirates, from the June 2005 examination session was presented to Muhammad Umair Muzaffar, Arab Unity School, Dubai; Reyna Lopesh Desai, Dubai Gem Private School; Khaled Assem El-Badawi, Al Nahda National School for Boys, Abu Dhabi; Yasmin Adel Al Magloub, Al Najah Private School, Abu Dhabi; Mohammed Ammar Abdul-Latif, Wesgreen International School, Sharjah; Apoorva M Kalasurmath, Al Ain Juniors School; Ahmed Osama Mahmoud Zaki Moh'd Khattab, The Westminster School Dubai; Eman Ali Malalla Mohd Binjab, Rosary School, Dubai; Hussam Ibrahim Elzanati, Al Dhafra Private Schools, Abu Dhabi; Tharindi S. Hapuarachchi, Al Nahda National School for Girls, Abu Dhabi; Hashim Mohammed Hashim, Al Ma’arifa International School, Sharjah; Kainat Abbasi, Our Own English High School, Al Ain; Krishnan Unni, Anuradhi Chandrasekera and Si Thu Kyaw of Cambridge International School, Dubai and Abu Dhabi; Aamenah Ghulam Rasool Topiwala, Al Nahda National School for Girls, Abu Dhabi; Maanisaad Shahriar Al Ain Juniors School; and Mariam Rizk of Al Ain Juniors School.

The Cambridge Best in the World Awards was presented to students who have achieved the highest marks in the world at Cambridge IGCSE, A and AS Level in any subject. Each winner received a trophy, certificate and a book from Cambridge University Press. The winners included the Cambridge Special Achievement Award, presented to two students for academic achievement and overcoming significant personal challenges. These include Mahmoud Hesham Mohamed Fouad, Our Own English High School, Al Ain; and Tanver Mansur, Al Tawaan Private School (Sherwood Academy), Abu Dhabi.

The Cambridge Award was presented to three students — Nizar Hasan, International Community School, Abu Dhabi; Quratulain Shahzad, The Westminster School, Dubai; and Maanisaad Shahriar Al Ain Juniors School. The students were nominated by schools for making the most significant contribution to the life of their school and local community.

Meanwhile, the Cambridge Inspirational Teacher Award recognising the hard working teachers of the Cambridge programme who have inspired students in their school which include a Trophy, certificate and a cheque for £250 for their school was presented to Ziad Aoudi, International Community School, Abu Dhabi; Yasser Ahmad Kaddoura, Alworood Academy, Abu Dhabi, and Amy Simmons of Al Nahda National School for Girls, Abu Dhabi.

In addition, the Cambridge ICT Innovation Award was presented to Cambridge International School, Dubai for demonstrating the most innovative use of ICT in their teaching. The Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cambridge ICT Centre Award in recognition of the number of students now taking qualifications in IT subjects was presented to the Arab Unity School, Dubai; ICT Starters and The Oxford School, Dubai; for high number of successful students in the Cambridge International Diploma in IT Skills, and in ICT.
