Two youngsters have been arrested for performing dangerous car drifts and stunts during rains on a public road in Al Ain.
The Abu Dhabi Police said on Wednesday that the Emirati men were nabbed after a video of them driving recklessly and performing road stunts during the recent rains went viral on social media.
Brigadier Mohammed Dhahi Al Humairi, director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said the police initiated an investigation shortly after the video clip circulated on social media and arrested the two young men.
"The police swung into action, identified and tracked down the offenders," said the officer.
Police said during the road stunts, one of the youngsters rammed the vehicle of the second offender. "One of the vehicles had no number plates," said Al Humairi.
The two vehicles involved in the road stunts were impounded, while the young men have been referred to the public prosecution for legal action.
Al Humairi has warned against driving vehicles recklessly on the roads. He stressed that the law punishes a person who drives a vehicle in a manner that endangers their life as well as that of others. The law also penalises drivers who damage public property or drive a car without number plates.
He said motorists are urged to stick to traffic regulations or risk hefty fines and even seizure of their vehicles.
"Motorists performing road stunts, racing on public roads and those filming the stunts and posting the videos on social media are violating the law," said police.
The force warned that reckless drivers could be fined up to Dh2,000 and 23 black points placed on their licence. Offenders could also have their vehicle impounded for up to 60 days.
Families have also been reminded to monitor their children during the rains and not to allow minors to drive vehicles without a licence.
"Teenagers should also be prevented from participating in youth gatherings and performing dangerous stunts with vehicles," police said in a statement.
