The Ras Al Khaimah Municipality fined 22 laundries last year for offences related to cleanliness issues, breaching maximum capacity and using improper equipment, water resources and detergents.
Munzir bin Shukr Al Zaabi, director-general of the civic body, said: "Some of the laundries failed to meet the set health standards and conditions. Some of the staff workers did not have the mandatory health cards and that posed a grave risk to people's health."
Some laundries were being run from traditional houses.
As per rules, walls and floors of laundries must be tiled with ceramics and automatic washing machines need to be used. Secure drains, and plastic shelves for clothes are also musts. Laundries must be in an area of at least 300 feet, Al Zaabi said. He said that some of the errant laundries were earlier issued warning letters, but they were ignored. "They were then slapped with a hefty fine."
Mohammed Sabri, an Egyptian resident, said he was shocked when he saw a man on a bike transporting his clothes for cleaning in an unidentified place. "I discovered later that he was carrying the clothes to clean at his house."
Wafaa Saqr, a Syrian, said most of the clothes are cleaned at labour accommodations. "I even lost some of my husband's trousers while having them cleaned at a laundry here."
Ali Salem, an Emirati, said he stopped sending his clothes to the laundry after suffering a skin allergy. "This was because of the dangerous detergents that were used to clean the clothes."
