Four people - three Asians and a Somali - died on Tuesday and a fifth suffered serious injuries after a collision between a truck and a double cabin vehicle on Habashan Road in Al Gharbia in the Western Region.

According to Major Suhail Sayah Al Mazroui, chief of the Western Region Highways Section, preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the double cabin vehicle failed to maintain control and swerved into oncoming traffic, leading to a head on collision with the truck.

Traffic patrols responded immediately after receiving emergency calls and the Abu Dhabi Police Ambulance service transferred the injured passenger to the Madinat Zayed Hospital.

At the accident site, the rescue team had to use hydraulic cutters to reach the people who were trapped under the heavy truck. Four had died on the spot.

Major Al Mazroui urged drivers not to drive in the opposite direction lanes and abide by lane discipline and speed limits on the road, besides leaving enough space between vehicles and keeping the seatbelts fastened. Moving onto the path of oncoming traffic is a very serious violation that leads to terrible accidents, he noted.
