Sharjah has installed 40 radars at traffic lights and internal roads to detect speeding and red-light violations. The radars will become operational from the first day of 2016, a senior police officer told Khaleej Times.
Colonel Ahmed bin Darwish, deputy director of the traffic department, said the new radars are aimed at reducing speeding-related accidents.
He said the radars have been installed after research identified the areas that witnessed the largest number of accidents.
"Many motorists don't reduce speed on seeing a traffic signal turn yellow. They speed to pass through before it turns red and this causes many accidents," he said.
Col bin Darwish said many fatal accidents resulted from speeding in 2015. In many instances, vehicles turned turtle as speeding motorists lost control over the wheel.
"These radars will definitely force motorists to follow the speed limit to avoid hefty fines and black points. The project will ensure safety for pedestrians as well as motorists."
The police have set a target of reducing fatal traffic accidents by over 50 per cent.
