Sharjah - Inspectors from the Sharjah Municipality visited 29,499 establishments including food outlets, food manufacturing companies, cafeterias and restaurants.

Over 4,000 food outlets in Sharjah were fined for violating health and hygiene regulations since the beginning of the year.
Inspectors from the Sharjah Municipality visited 29,499 establishments including food outlets, food manufacturing companies, cafeterias and restaurants, and found that 4,213 eateries were violating health and hygiene regulations.
Some of the errant outlets were slapped with hefty fines of up to Dh10,000, while some others were shut down temporarily until they rectified the violation, said Shaikha Rasha Al Qasimi, Head of the health department and food control laboratory at the Sharjah Municipality. Some eateries were let off after being warned.
Al Qasimi said every year the section develops inspection plans during the summer season, Ramadan and Eid to ensure "the residents of the emirate enjoy good health".
The inspectors checked the level of personal hygiene maintained by the employees of the food outlet. They checked if the employees are abiding by health protection rules related to food storing, preparing, distribution and temperature.
The inspection campaigns also included awareness activities to educate the food traders about the importance of proper storing and maintaining cool temperature for food items.
She stressed that the inspection is continuous trough out the year and intensified in seasons and festival days.
She urged public to call the municipality at 993 for any complaints regarding food violations.
