Ninety private schools tried to hike their fees for the 2016-17 academic year, by applying to the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC). Only 51 of them met ADEC's eligibility criteria and got the approval to raise fees.
Among the applications, 15 schools implement Asian curricula, and 75 implement other curricula. The average fee increase was approximately 6 per cent.
According to ADEC, the approval was issued after thoroughly reviewing and assessing all applications against the regulations.
To qualify for a fee increase, schools must meet performance standards measured in annual inspections, according to the number of total points earned in each of the five basic standards. These include the recruitment of quality teachers and focusing on professional development and salaries. Another criterion is investment in school buildings' maintenance, facilities and extensions compared to the previous year.
The percentage of Emiratis among the teaching, administrative and technical staff, as well as students, is considered. Plus the admission of special needs students and the provision of support and facilities needed by them. The school must also have a CCTV system installed by a certified company.
Schools were also required to submit audited accounts for the last financial school years, in accordance with the criteria set by ADEC Private School Policy and Manual.
Only schools running for three years or over, possessing valid licences, and with performance levels maintained as per ADEC's programme, are eligible to seek the fee increase.
