70 selected for Dh7.5 million women's Quran competition

Dubai International Holy Quran Award officials announce details of the Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak International Holy Quran Competition that will be held on Nov 6-18.

Dubai - The participants aged between nine and 25 years stand to win Dh250,000; Dh200,000; and Dh150,000 for the first, second and third prizes respectively.

 Seventy female Quran memorisers will compete in the first edition of the Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak International Holy Quran Competition on November 6-18.

The Dh7.5 million contest is a category of the 14-branch Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA) annually organised every Ramadan under the sponsorship of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The contest is in recognition of Shaikh Fatima's relentless efforts and distinguished role in the service of Islam and the Holy Quran. Shaikha Fatima, wife of the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was named the Islamic Personality of the Year last year.
Ibrahim Mohammed Bu Melha, Adviser to the Ruler of Dubai for Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs and Head of the Award Organising Committee, on Sunday said the contest will take place at the Cultural and Scientific Association in Al Mamzar, Dubai.

Twelve scholars specialised in the science of Qiraat (schools of recitation) who have experience in arbitrating international Quran contests will be part of the jury for the contest.
Up to 500 questions have been prepared for the competition. "Each contestant has to answer five questions in two shifts - three in the morning and two in the evening."
The competitors are scheduled to arrive in Dubai on November 3, Bu Melha said.
