Deeply moved by how the environment is being destroyed by overuse and misuse of resources, nine-year-old Yug Shah decided to do his part to make a difference. He managed to collect over 500kg of recyclable material in two weeks.
Important: Six things you can do for a more ECO-FRIENDLY lifestyle
Already a member of several environmental groups like Students for the Earth, and Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), and having participated in events like World Environment day, Earth Day and Earth Hour, Yug this time decided to literally take the matter into his hands. The Neighbourhood Recycling Project started by EEG gave the youngster the platform to show his enthusiasm, giving him a chance to act as a responsible change agent.
Good attempt: Dubai Municipality launches first library of recycled vehicle materials
Participating members were required to prepare flyers and distribute them to promote recycling in their neighbourhood. Members had to encourage their friends, neighbours and relatives for collection of recyclable materials for two weeks.
A grade 5 student of Our Own High School, Al Warqaa, Yug designed his own recycling programme by first preparing a flyer to educate people on the importance of recycling. He not only sent it to about 25 friends, neighbours and relatives, but also went door to door encouraging people to recycle paper and educate them on its benefits.
To start young: 100 schools in Dubai to get solar panels
The young eco-warrior believes that everyone has a responsibility to make Mother Earth happy. "It is our responsibility to take action and spread awareness among people so that all become environment conscious."
His friends and neighbours supported him in collecting the recyclable waste and within two weeks he managed to collect 526kg of recyclable paper. This he deposited to EEG for recycling and is now entitled to plant one tree at EEG.
