Motorists were in for a surprise when they received headphones from police in the Capital.
To raise the awareness of motorists to stop using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, a number of Abu Dhabi Police staff have distributed headphones to motorists during Eid.
Brigadier Ahmed Abdullah Al Shehi, deputy director of the directorate of traffic and patrols of Abu Dhabi Police, called upon motorists to necessarily abide by the traffic laws and rules.
Al Shehi added that getting busy with a cell phone while driving to send Eid greetings and attend to calls by hand or browse the social media websites will definitely lead to traffic accidents and obstruct traffic flow.
"Getting engaged with a mobile phone rather than the road does distract the driver's attention and his/her focus on the road," he said.
Further, a driver, who uses a cell phone while at the wheel keeps him away from the driving environment, and makes him unable to drive at a regular and proper speed, and fail to maintain a safety distance between the car ahead, Al Shehi said.
As a result, the driver swings between lanes, which leads the vehicle to swerve and causes accidents. A study conducted by the directorate of traffic and patrols has warned of the risks of getting engaged with a mobile phone while driving and its effects on the driver's ability on changing lanes correctly.
The study concluded that there is no difference between using a mobile phone by hand, or through a head phone, or a wireless speaker in the car since using the phone mainly puts more load and stress on the driver's mental functions and affects him/her psychologically while driving.
The Abu Dhabi Police said they have launched several awareness campaigns to educate the public about the need to follow traffic regulations and reduce the traffic-related accidents in the emirate.
