Taking legal action against the writer, known as the "poet of the senses", the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of First Instance on Thursday handed him down a three-month jail term for misusing social media. He has also been fined Dh 250,000.
The poet reportedly published a poem online using social media, which is contrary to the UAE's social values, ethics and religion. Use of modern technology and social media in crime is considered a breach of order, public morals and abuse of modern technologies.
The court has refused to release the accused on bail as per request of his lawyer. Last year also, the competent authorities had taken legal action against a citizen for misusing social media and breaching public morality.
