Traffic regulations in Abu Dhabi may get tougher in order to reduce the number of accidents and deaths, Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Rumaithi, the Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police, told Khaleej Times.
On the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Police's event on Monday to launch the new identity logo, Major General Al Rumaithi said that authorities will continue to focus heavily on traffic safety during the summer season. "Traffic safety is the main issue and I think we have talked a great deal about this issue and done a lot of awareness sessions, but people still don't obey driving rules."
"We will come to a conclusion where we will have to enforce tougher rules on road use, to reduce accidents and deaths," he added.
Although he did not state the date and details of the new rules to be introduced, he stressed that authorities are determined to reduce traffic-related fatalities.
"If it will save lives, we will do it," noted Major General Al Rumaithi.
Abu Dhabi Police have put vigorous effort into decreasing the number of road accidents this summer, including the newly introduced Federal Traffic Law which took effect on July 1, as well as increasing the number of police patrols across the UAE Capital.
Authorities are also intensely focusing on promoting road safety campaigns through their various social media platforms, including Instagram, to ensure that younger drivers take road rules seriously. "Our mandate is to secure Abu Dhabi and save lives, to ensure that our nationals, visitors and expats live happily and safely. This is our job and our core business, and we will continue to do it," said the police official.
