The lead character is played by Sarita Joshi, empress of the over 150-year-old Gujarati theatre circuit. The play, an original piece of work written by Jayesh Mehta and directed by Vipul Mehta, has been a smash hit in the sub-continent and abroad with over 93 shows since its creation.

Sarita Mehta told a Press conference yesterday that like the play's title, her character is a spectrum of colours and shades. She said that the play highlights the universality of a mother's nature, her priorities and strengths and weaknesses.

"But what makes this play an exceptional treat is the realistic approach to the subject, the language and tone used," she said, adding that even those audience who are not very good at Gujarati will be able to enjoy the 'musical linguistics' in the play.

Replying to a question, Sarita said her role in Masaala Maami is the most applauded one after her acclaimed performance in Santo Rangili, which was launched in 1973 and ran successfully for the next nine years.

It is interesting to note that Rangmanch had launched itself with Sakku Bai, a commended Hindi play, in which Sarita had performed all the characters.

Amin Rajwani, Rangmanch partner, said that the group was committed to bringing Indian vernacular theatre to Dubai and that this play is the first step in that direction. He said that despite its dedication to the traditional theatre of regional languages, Rangmanch will always be focused on Hindi theatre.

Bharatbhai Shah, Dubai-based Indian entrepreneur and supporter of the theare movement in Dubai, said: "What Nargis and Meena Kumari are to the Indian film world, Sarita ben is for the Gujarati Rangbhoomi."

Faraaz Javed, the winner of Rangmanch's acting competition conducted last year during a theatre festival, was presented with a return air ticket to Mumbai, where he would attend an acting workshop with Nadira Babbar.

Expressing his thanks to Rangmanch for providing him the opportunity to prove his talent, Mr Javed said that during the competition he was pitted against extremely talented youngsters, some of whom were professional performers.

Asked if he looked forward to being a part of the theatre or had other things in mind for his future, Mr Ahmed said that "all this is because of luck," and added that he wasn't sure what the future holds for him.

Producer Sanjay Goradia and Rangmanch General Manager Laila Merchant were also present on the occasion.

Two shows of the play will be staged at the auditorium from 6pm and 9pm onwards this evening.
