Four men faced trial on Sunday for allegedly attempting to rob Dh10 million belonging to the UAE Central Bank.
The Court of First Instance heard the four Nigerians, all unemployed, together with an accomplice still at large, kept two bank customers under close watch and attacked them with knives as soon as they came out carrying the large amounts of money from a bank.
However, the four had to run away empty-handed after some bank customers managed to enter their car and call the police.
The four accused, aged 25 and 27, have been charged with attempted robbery at night with sharp tools and physical assault.
The incident took place on August 24 near a bank in Naif.
One of the two guards, who were attacked, is a 41-year-old Indian. He said during the investigation that he went with two colleagues to withdraw large amounts of cash from ATM in Meydan Bani Yas in Naif around 9 pm.

"We put the money inside the vehicle but all of a sudden we were attacked by two Africans. One of them stabbed me with a knife in the abdomen so I got inside and locked the car. My workmate ran for his life after he was threatened with knives".
However, they had to run away after they failed to open the door.
All the accused admitted they carried out the attack after planning it and stalking the bank customers.
According to the public prosecution, the four and their accomplice had also arranged for a car to carry the stolen money.
The trial has been adjourned to February 1.
