The Ajman Municipality has ordered the temporary closure of a restaurant that served shawarma and grilled chicken for failing to abide by health and hygiene rules.
A top official at the Ajman Municipality said they received complaints from consumers about the restaurant. Municipal inspectors visited the outlet and found that chicken was being grilled in a machine that was left in the open and exposed to dust, dirt and bacteria.
The restaurant has been fined as well and will remain shut till it rectifies the situation and ensures that health regulations are met.
"The municipality has made it mandatory for all major food outlets in Ajman to stop exposing food products to dirt and banned them from displaying food items outside the shops. Sun rays can damage food, leading to major health hazards and several diseases," said the official.
He pointed out that the health department intensifies its inspection campaign every summer to ensure that food items are stored properly. "Many of the store owners disconnect the power supply during summer time in order to save on electricity, a practice that makes food products unfit for human consumption."
He said the health section and central lab are keeping a strict control on such malpractices and limits their impact by carrying out regular and surprise food inspection campaigns. "These campaigns are aimed at ensuring a safe food market and eliminating the sources of unfit, harmful and low-quality food," the official stressed.
