Two factories were closed after 40,000 fake sanitisers worth Dh500,000 were seized from them by the Department of Economic Development (DED)-Ajman on Sunday evening.
After the removal of the labels, it was found that the original product was a body spray and not medical sanitiser, as promoted. The DED immediately seized the fake products and withdrew the items from outlets.
Ahmed Khair Al Blooshi, director of control and consumer protection department, said: "A team of inspectors was able to reach the main supplier after tracking supply chain to eradicate this fraud at its very core. We underline that we will have zero tolerance against anyone who causes harm to the safety and health of community or cashes in on the growing demand of a number of products. We will deter this category and stop offenders by imposing hefty fines and taking legal actions."
He added that all exploiters and offenders will be strongly dealt with to secure the markets and to put an end to the wrong practices taking place in the emirate amid the coronavirus crisis.
Al Blooshi stressed that DED-Ajman will carry out all procedures and actions to protect the markets from such unscrupulous traders and manufacturers. Inspections will continue to crack down on such elements, he added.
"The DED will carry out inspection campaigns at sales outlets to prevent exploitation from manipulating and forging products."
The department will work to provide advice and guidance to dealers on the importance of adhering to laws and ensuring consumer protection from counterfeit products," he added.
