An Arab stood trial at the Sharjah Misdemeanor Court for allegedly harassing an Arab woman as he asked for her phone number in her building's lift.
The complainant told the court that the accused had taken the elevator with her around 9:00pm on October 20, 2018. Moments after he entered the lift, the man asked for her phone number and repeated the request even though she told him that she was married, the woman said.
The victim added that she got extremely scared and as she was getting out of the elevator, the accused deliberately touched her shoulder.
During the hearing, the accused admitted that he took the lift with her. He added that he asked the woman for her phone number only once and stopped after he learnt that she was married. He denied touching her while she was getting out of the elevator.
As the hearing concluded, the victim said that she did not wish to pursue the complaint further against the accused. The defendant's lawyer requested the court to acquit his client as he was innocent.
The case was adjourned to January 9.
