In the presence of Shaikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, chairman of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) and Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, general manager of the authority, artist Guy Ferrer unveiled the nine-piece sculpture.
“As our city evolves and develops, we are keen to make sure that we put the people at the centre of what we do,” declared Shaikh Sultan, adding that this is the reason for the sculpture to be placed in a public space.
“We want people to stop, look, think and engage with this work.
“We hope that it will inspire people, young and old, and that it will be enjoyed long into the future,” he added.
T.O.L.E.R.A.N.C.E. is an installation of nine monumental bronze sculptures, each representing a letter of the word “tolerance”. In turn, each letter evokes a different religion or spirituality.
The sculpture took two years to complete and it is the second in a series of eight editions. The first sculpture, almost identical to this one, was unveiled in France last year, while the other six are planned for strategic cities around the world.
“T.O.L.E.R.A.N.C.E. suggests peace and fraternity.
“We live in an increasingly global world where culture misrepresentations are greater than ever, so this artwork, which I first conceived in 2004 as a reaction to global preoccupation with religious and spiritual differences,” said Ferrer.
The French artist of Algerian origin, known for both paintings and sculptures, has been one of the Gaelic country’s leading creative minds for nearly three decades.
His sculptures, which include the “Quest”, the “Emperor’s Ball” and the “Prayer” are expressions of man’s symbolism, reflections on a human being’s passage through time.
