The civic body here, as part of intensive inspection raids, has slapped hefty fines on a number of barbershops in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain.
According to a senior official, the barbers proved to have used unclean and unfit shaving and cutting tools, ointments and creams.
Ghanim Ali Saeed Ghanim, Head of the Public Health and Environment, UAQ Municipality, said the raids done were meant to curb hazardous health violations, and make sure the cutting and saving tools used are fit.
"All the cutting and shaving tools must be properly cleaned and steriliaed as per the set rules on a regular basis to protect customers' health and prevent spread of contagious diseases."
Ghanim warned that his section will launch more surprise raids to clamp down all negative phenomena. "The UAQ Municipality shall never tolerate any health violations that pose a grave risk to people's health."
Elaborating, he said large quantities of unfit combs, razors, scissors, napkins, creams, powder, as well as shaving and cutting machines were seized during the raids intensified in the holy month of Ramadan.
"All the items and tools confiscated proved to be expired, rusty, or used on more than one customer in violation of the set health and environment rules and regulations."
The managers of the nabbed coiffeurs were all ordered to pay hefty fines (unidentified), and forced to pledge in writing never to repeat the same breaches, he stated. "Should they be involved in the same violations, they would face bigger fines, licence withdrawal, and permanent closure, let alone stiffer legal action which may include deportation."
Meanwhile, surprise inspection raids will be intensified on a daily basis all day round on two shifts against all food institutions at all areas of the emirate. "We shall deal with no tolerance with any violation that may pose a risk to customers' health."
Ghanim urged the public to report any violation they come across via toll free number 050-6866011, promising instant legal action in case the reported violation proves to be true.
