The Beit Al Khair Society is all set to spend Dh110 million on an array of charity activities and functions during the holy month of Ramadan this year.
Abdeen Taher Al Awadhi, director-general of the society, said the nationwide campaign is geared to help 20,000 low-income families, 1,900 orphans and 15,000 needy students, in addition to thousands of emergency cases.
"Up to 200,000 free Iftar meals - 7,000 per day - are also to be distributed to workers and financially incapable people during the campaign themed 'Good Omen to Good Doers'."
Saeed Mubarak Al Mazrouie, deputy director-general of the society, said the society managed to collect and spent Dh222 million on local charity projects last year.
"Up to Dh102million of these were dedicated to last Ramadan's programmes."
Abdullah Al Ustaz, assistant director-general of the society, said Beit Al Khair Society has specified 125 locations with well-trained agents for collecting contributions this Ramadan.
"The charity boxes of the society and its representative will be available in all emirates of the country."
Official records show that Beit Al Khair Society spent Dh169 million out of its Dh222 million expenditure last year on low-income families; a leading project of the association.
Foodstuff Ramadan packages, worth Dh26.6 million, added to Zakat Al Fitr, valued at Dh2.7 million, were also distributed to eligible people last year, he elaborated.
"The Adahi or sacrificed meat project hit Dh3 million while the Oath atonement programme amounted to Dh2 million, and these were contributed to the poor," he said noting that Dh15 million were given to the listed orphans last year.
