Dubai Municipality has warned against Green Coffee 1000, which claims weight loss benefits.
The civic body said the UAE Ministry of Health previously mentioned in 2013 that Green Coffee 1000 contains globally banned substances that cause serious health side effects and the product is not registered in the country and is prohibited for trading.
In a statement issued on Monday, the municipality mentioned that the ministry found hazardous substances in the product such as Sibutramine and Phenolphthalein after the Pharmacy Inspection Section had referred samples to food control labs.
"The laboratory report showed that there are many caveats when using Sibutramine because they increase the risk of heart attack and stroke for patients who have a history of heart and blood vessel problems," the statement read.
Global health authorities such as the US food and drug administration had warned towards avoiding the use of such products.
The ministry had elaborated that Sibutramine should not be used during many medical conditions, including patients with problems of coronary artery, blood pressure and people who had blockage in the arteries, or bouts of angina pectoris, or increased or irregular heartbeat.
The lab report further said if it is used with other drugs it could result in an increase in the levels of toxicity or side effects.
The official clarification was issued as part of the "Confirmed News" initiative launched on Dubai Municipality portal, which aims to reduce the circulation of rumors that are spread through the means of social media and to correct false news and malicious rumors and address them quickly.
